Online teaching – seriously?
Put fear aside and look AI straight in the eye
Development of flexible, online education offers has been an expectation of Nordic authorities and part of strategy in higher education since the turn of the millennium. Nevertheless, the actual offer has been sporadic, with modest development.
Now, however, digital courses are increasingly in demand. For the first time, three web-based programmes climbed into the top ten list of the most popular educations by applicants in Norway. Are we finally approaching a tipping point for online in higher education? Why should we offer online education and what is needed to create it with good quality?
Every major technology change has massive effects on society and may disrupt everything. From the book printing technology to internet and now artificial intelligence (AI).
Although AI is developing faster than anything else we have seen in history, the mechanisms remain the same. Should it not be possible to apply the established didactic principles when using AI tools – in the same way educators have adjusted their teaching methods according to different situations?
It is time to put fear aside and look AI straight in the eye to find out how this technology can be used to the advantage of education. In this session we address the opportunities of AI, how the concerns should be handled, and provide examples of how it can be used.
Only a few institutions have managed to stay ahead of the online education game. One of them is the University of Edinburgh, a Top 100 University that now has more than 70 programmes available online.
Already in the early 2000s, a strategic business decision was made to become a leading provider of both MOOCs (massive open online courses) and accredited online courses.
Why and exactly how did they manage do it? With almost 20 years of experience, what have they learned about delivering an exceptional experience for online learners?
Stuart Nicol
Head of Educational Design & Engagement at University of Edinburgh will reveal the strategies and experiences behind the success.
Another example is the country of Ukraine, which because of the Russian invasion had to keep schools and education alive – digitally.
Ukraine was forced to establish a functioning online education system in a very short time. At the same pace, they learnt what teachers and students need, and what kind of methods and technologies it requires. Now, we have the chance to learn from Ukraine.
Olha Bershadska
Consultant on Digital and Blended Learning of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, will share insight and experiences.
Creative coder and artist Andreas Refsgaard has been playing, learning and creating with AI for years.
Andreas teaches workshops on creative uses of AI, code and machine learning at Danish and international art and design schools. He will demonstrate how to take advantage of AI in creative processes.
Rebekka Olsson Omslandseter is an AI enthusiast and PhD student at the University of Agder (UiA), and part of UiA's CAIR team – an Artificial Intelligence Research Centre.
When she is not delving into complex AI grouping problems, she works part-time as a consultant at Bouvet, where she works, among other things, on putting AI tools to use for data analysis and insight, including in the power grid. Rebekka also spreads enthusiasm as a lecturer at UiA.
